Things to Consider When
Investing in A Winch
You've just
purchased a Jeep or other four wheel drive, maybe your first one, and you take
it out a few days later to your local off road park, and you get stuck. Luckily
one of your buddies you came with or say another four wheel drive owner, helps get
you out with the added accessory of having a winch. Right then, you think to
yourself how convenient it would be to have a winch attached to the front of
your own four wheel drive. If one can afford this accessory, its always a great
thing to have a little extra security when the time comes, and be a little more
confident you can get out of what ever trouble you get into. Today I will share
with you some things to consider when purchasing your first ever winch.
The first
thing to consider is your budget, just how much do you have to invest towards
purchasing your first winch. I've read in the past of fellow off roader's
buying a winch from such places has Harbor Freight, and being very pleased with
how well it has performed for he or she while off roading. And for most, the
holy grail of winches is Warn, which is well known for making high quality
winches. With Warn, you are getting quality, and with quality comes high
priced. But for the majority of individuals, I've read numerous counts of he or
she owning a Ramsey winch, and having just as good performance as one would see
with a Warn winch.
A second
thing to consider is, how much winching power do you estimate you will need?
For most smaller four wheel drives, an 8000lb pulling capacity winch is more
than one will ever need to pull him or her from a stuck position. For larger
four wheel drives, one might want to consider going to a 9000lb pulling
capacity winch to aid him or her to safety. Most Jeep and other four wheel drive
owners tend to want to insure they have more than enough pulling capacity, if
he or she ever so needs so in the future.
A third
thing to consider is, how do you plan to mount the winch to your four wheel
drive? Most Jeep owners, who have a low budget, go with a winch mounting plate
that bolts to the factory bumper in front of the Jeep. For most larger
four wheel drives though, winch manufacturers make a mounting plate that mounts
around the factory bumper and attaches to the front portion of the frame rails
underneath your four wheel drive. For those with a bigger budget, most consider
purchasing an entire new front bumper which the winch mounts into.
